Toyota Avanza Engine Oil Guide Malaysia — 0W-20 or 5W-30?
New 2NR-VE uses 0W-20 SP (3.9L); old 3SZ-VE uses 5W-30 SN (3.6L). Choosing the right oil grade for each generation.

3SZ-VE (Pre-2022) — 5W-30 Semi-Synthetic
Capacity: 3.5L. Toyota recommends 5W-30 API SN or SN PLUS. Must change every 5,000 km — the VVT-i actuator in this engine is particularly sensitive to old oil. Stretching to 8,000–10,000 km with semi-synthetic is the number one cause of sludge in 3SZ-VE engines we see.
2NR-VE (2022+) — 0W-20 Full Synthetic
Capacity: 3.9L. Specifies 0W-20 SP full synthetic. Can go 10,000 km intervals. This engine uses a timing chain and is very oil-quality-sensitive — don't cheap out on the oil.
