Toyota Avanza Generation Guide Malaysia — Old vs New
3SZ-VE (2006–2018) vs D27A 2NR-VE (2019+) — maintenance cost, reliability and used car value comparison for Malaysian buyers.

Toyota Avanza has gone through two major generations in Malaysia. Here's how to choose between them on the used market.
Old Generation (2003–2021) — 3SZ-VE
Proven long-term reliability. Simple 4-speed automatic — very cheap to fix. Main risks: VVT-i sludge from stretched oil changes, ageing suspension and A/C components. Watch for accident history and rust at RM 15,000–40,000 second-hand price range.
New Generation (2022–present) — 2NR-VE
Modern CVT, better fuel economy, DNGA platform. No long-term reliability data yet at high mileage — but early signs are positive. CVT requires proper fluid maintenance unlike the old 4AT. Price range: RM 65,000–90,000 new. Watch for CVT judder in units that haven't had fluid service.
