Subaru BRZ Timing Chain Service Malaysia
The Subaru BRZ FA20 and FA24 both use a timing chain — not a timing belt — which is a significant advantage as there is no scheduled replacement interval. The timing chain is designed to last the life of the engine with regular oil changes. However, using poor-quality or overly degraded engine oil can accelerate chain wear and cause tensioner issues. BRZ owners should maintain strict oil change intervals, especially for high-mileage or track-use vehicles, to keep the timing chain system in good health.

BRZ FA20 Timing Chain
The FA20 boxer in the BRZ uses dual timing chains. These are reliable with proper full synthetic oil. The hydraulic lash adjuster (HLA) rattle on cold start is a known FA20 characteristic — not a chain problem. HLA noise that persists beyond 10 seconds may indicate sludge in oil passages from infrequent changes; in that case, an engine flush before oil change is recommended.
