Subaru BRZ Generations Guide Malaysia
The Subaru BRZ has two generations available in Malaysia: the ZC6 first generation (2012–2021) powered by the FA20 2.0L naturally aspirated boxer, and the ZD8 second generation (2022 onwards) with the improved FA24 2.4L naturally aspirated boxer. Both are rear-wheel drive sports coupes co-developed with Toyota as the Toyota 86 and GR86. The ZD8 delivers more torque and improved mid-range power — addressing the ZC6's flat torque curve criticism. Many parts are interchangeable across the BRZ and Toyota 86 platform, benefiting parts availability in Malaysia.

Subaru BRZ Generations Guide
- ZN6 (2012–2021): 1st gen BRZ; Toyota 86 co-development; FA20 2.0L NA flat-four; 200 hp; timing chain; known for mid-corner hesitation (torque dip) at 3000–4500 RPM — mostly tuned out with ECU flash
- ZN6 variants: GT (base), S (mid), R (top); 6MT or 6AT; HID or halogen headlights depending on year; late ZN6 (2017–2021 Series 2) revised front clip and suspension tuning — better than early ZN6
- ZD8 (2022+): 2nd gen BRZ; FA24 2.4L NA — 228 hp; more torque fills in old ZN6 dip; wider body, longer wheelbase; improved steering feel; Toyota GR86 equivalent; best BRZ yet — buy new or near-new ZD8 for best experience
- BRZ used buying: ZN6 — confirm no track damage, check rear diff and clutch wear; ZD8 — check for launch control abuse via DCVT data; both generations have excellent parts sharing with Toyota 86/GR86
