The fuel pump is responsible for delivering petrol from the tank to the engine at the correct pressure. When it weakens or fails, your car may struggle to start, stall on the highway, or feel sluggish under acceleration — problems that get worse in Malaysia's stop-start traffic.
Warning signs of a failing fuel pump
- •Hard starting — engine cranks but takes unusually long to fire up
- •Engine sputtering or misfiring at highway speeds above 90 km/h
- •Sudden stall that restarts after a few minutes (pump overheating)
- •Loss of power under load — hill climbs or heavy acceleration feel weak
- •Whining noise from the rear of the car (pump struggling)
Diagnosis & replacement cost in Malaysia
A workshop will use a fuel pressure gauge to test whether the pump is delivering adequate pressure (typically 3–4 bar for most engines). If pressure drops under load, pump replacement is required.
