Pajero Sport 4N15 diesel uses a timing chain — no replacement belt interval. The chain is designed to last the engine lifetime with proper oil maintenance. Critical: 5W-30 diesel-spec oil changed every 10,000 km is the primary chain protection. A brief cold-start rattle that clears within 30 seconds as oil pressure builds is normal. Persistent chain rattle after warmup suggests chain or tensioner wear and should be investigated. Clean oil is the best prevention — extended oil change intervals are not appropriate for diesel engines.

The 4N16 in the Pajero Sport uses a timing chain. Use correct low-SAPS diesel oil; do not use standard petrol engine oil or high-SAPS diesel oil as it accelerates chain wear and clogs the DPF. At 100,000 km, a visual inspection of chain slack is worthwhile during major service.
