Mercedes-Benz E-Class Timing Chain — M274 Reliability Guide Malaysia
M274 engine (W213) is significantly more reliable than the M271 (W204). However, timing chain stretch can still occur after 150,000+ km without proper oil maintenance. Guide for Malaysian E-Class owners.
E-Class timing chain concerns are different from C-Class. The W212 V6 M272 issue is with the balance shaft sprocket chain (not the main timing chain). The W213 M274 4-cylinder has a significantly improved timing chain design.
M272 V6 — balance shaft sprocket (not main timing chain)
The M272 main timing chain is robust and rarely fails. The balance shaft sprocket is the weak point — it is made of a composite material that wears down. The sprocket teeth eventually strip, causing the balance shaft to lose its timed relationship with the crankshaft. This also drives the oil pump, so a severely worn sprocket can cause oil pressure loss.
Cost at 4M Car Care: RM 4,000–7,000 for full balance shaft repair. Do not delay — if a sprocket fails completely, it can cause catastrophic engine damage costing RM 15,000+.
W213 M274 — improved chain, low concern
The W213's M274 uses an all-metal timing chain with improved guides. Timing chain issues on the M274 are rare and typically associated with prolonged oil neglect beyond 150,000 km. Regular oil changes with MB 229.51 are the best protection.
