Mercedes-Benz E-Class Common Problems Malaysia — W212/W213
W212 air suspension faults, rust on earlier models, 9G-Tronic judder on W213 and balance shaft failures on M274 engines are the top E-Class complaints in Malaysia. Know what to expect.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the benchmark executive saloon in Malaysia, available in two generations in the used market: W212 (2009–2016) and W213 (2016–2023). Both are refined, comfortable cars — but each has known reliability concerns Malaysian owners should understand.
W212 — balance shaft failure (M272 V6)
The M272 V6 engine in W212 E300 and E350 has a documented balance shaft sprocket failure. The composite sprocket teeth wear away, causing the balance shaft to lose timing — producing a deep knocking noise that worsens over time and can lead to oil pump failure and engine seizure.
Repair requires partial engine disassembly and balance shaft sprocket replacement. Cost at an independent specialist: RM 4,000–7,000. This is a known Mercedes factory design weakness — inspect carefully before any W212 V6 purchase.
W212 — AIRMATIC air suspension leaks
Many W212 E300/E350 variants in Malaysia were specified with AIRMATIC. The air spring rubber membrane deteriorates in Malaysia's heat and UV exposure, causing slow leaks. Symptom: car sits low at one corner overnight. Cost to replace: RM 1,800–3,500 per corner. Arnott and KW aftermarket air springs are popular alternatives.
W213 — 9G-Tronic judder
The W213 uses the 9G-Tronic — the same gearbox as the W205 C-Class with the same ATF sensitivity. Malaysian W213 E200 and E300 owners frequently report low-speed gearbox judder that is almost always resolved by an ATF service with MB 236.15.
