Mercedes-Benz CLA Common Problems Malaysia — C117/C118 DCT Issues
CLA DCT jerk in stop-start traffic, sunroof noise, rear suspension knock and M270 oil leaks (C117) are the most reported issues by Malaysian CLA owners. Generation-by-generation breakdown.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA comes in two generations sold in Malaysia: C117 (2013–2019) with the M270 engine and either 7DCT or 7G-Tronic, and C118 (2019+) on the W177 A-Class platform with M260/M270 and 7DCT exclusively. Both share the A-Class GDI carbon issue and DCT judder, but the coupe body adds panoramic roof concerns.
7DCT Judder (C117 / C118)
Same as A-Class: vibration on pullaway in slow traffic. Root cause is the same — wet clutch friction modifier depletion. Fix: correct DCT fluid flush. C117 CLA 200 owners sometimes have the 7G-Tronic instead — if so, the judder behaves like 9G-Tronic judder (ATF flush, not DCT fluid). Check the build plate or service history to confirm which gearbox is fitted.
Panoramic Sunroof Drain Blockage
The CLA C117/C118 panoramic sunroof has four drain tubes. These block with leaf debris and road grime in Malaysian conditions — particularly if the car is parked under trees. Symptoms: wet carpet or footwell after rain, no XENTRY fault. Fix: clear and flush drain tubes (RM 80–150 labour). Preventive flush every 2 years is good practice.
Carbon Buildup (GDI)
Both M270 and M260 engines in the CLA suffer from the same intake valve carbon buildup as the A-Class. By 60,000–80,000 km rough idle and hesitation appear. Walnut shell blasting is the correct fix. Carbon cleaning interval and cost are identical to A-Class.
