Buying a used Mercedes-Benz C-Class in Malaysia is a great value proposition — if you buy the right car. A poorly maintained C-Class can become a money pit. This checklist covers the essential checks before signing any paperwork.

• Cold start — listen for timing chain rattle in the first 30 seconds (M271 engine). This is non-negotiable.
• Check the oil filler cap interior for mayo-like creamy residue (head gasket failure or coolant leak).
• Panoramic sunroof — open and close fully, check for slow movement or grinding noise.
• Ask for service records — has the ATF ever been changed? Any major repairs?

• Test drive in slow traffic — check for 9G-Tronic jerk when moving off. Light jerk on ATF that's been changed is acceptable; harsh jerk on a car never serviced is a red flag.
• Ask for ASSYST history — what was the mileage at last Service A and Service B?
• Run a full XENTRY scan — check for ABS, SRS and gearbox fault codes before purchase.
• Check all electric windows, door locks, seat adjustments and the digital instrument cluster.

• Check for accident history (JPJ records, carfax equivalent services in Malaysia)
• Inspect all four tyres — remaining tread depth and any uneven wear pattern
