Mercedes-Benz C-Class 9G-Tronic ATF Service — When & Cost (Malaysia)

9G-Tronic requires MB 236.15 fluid — do not mix with other ATF. W205/W206 benefit from a change every 40,000–60,000 km. Jerky shifts or delayed engagement? It's time for an ATF service.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class 9G-Tronic ATF Service — When & Cost (Malaysia)

The 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox in W205 and W206 C-Class is a sophisticated 9-speed unit. Like any automatic gearbox, its fluid degrades over time — especially in Malaysia's urban stop-start traffic which generates more heat than highway driving.

Which ATF does the C-Class use?

The 9G-Tronic requires Mercedes-Benz ATF specification MB 236.15. This is a specific formulation — do not substitute with Dexron VI, ZF 8HP fluid or any generic ATF. Mixing incompatible fluids can damage the gearbox valve body.

Service interval and symptoms of degraded ATF

Mercedes does not specify a mandatory ATF change interval for the 9G-Tronic, calling it 'lifetime fill.' In Malaysian conditions, however, changing the fluid every 40,000–60,000 km is strongly recommended. City driving accelerates fluid degradation.

Symptoms of degraded ATF: slight jerk when moving off from standstill, gearbox 'hunting' between 1st and 2nd gear in slow traffic, hesitation on kickdown, and a slight shudder at highway speeds. All of these typically disappear after a proper ATF flush.

W204 5G-Tronic ATF

The older W204 C-Class uses the 5G-Tronic (5-speed automatic), which requires MB 236.6 ATF. The 5G-Tronic is generally more robust and less sensitive to fluid condition than the 9G-Tronic, but ATF changes every 60,000 km are still recommended.
