Three generations of C-Class are commonly found in Malaysia's used car market. Each has a different reliability profile, feature set and ownership cost. Here's how they compare.
W204 (2007–2014) — the classic, buyer beware
The W204 is the most affordable entry into C-Class ownership in Malaysia. Its angular styling has aged well and the interior feels premium despite its age. However, the M271 timing chain issue is the primary concern — always inspect carefully.
Best W204 to buy: a well-documented C200 or C250 with timing chain already replaced, full service history, under 120,000 km. Avoid any W204 with a cold-start rattle and no service records.
W205 (2014–2021) — the sweet spot
The W205 is the most popular C-Class in Malaysia's used market for good reason. It eliminates the M271 timing chain risk, introduces the 9G-Tronic (excellent when properly maintained), and brings a much more modern interior with larger screens.
Key risk: 9G-Tronic ATF maintenance history. A W205 with regular ATF changes every 40,000–60,000 km is an excellent used car purchase. One that has never had an ATF change above 80,000 km may need immediate gearbox attention.
W206 (2021+) — latest tech, highest cost
The W206 is a significant upgrade over the W205 — wider body, new M254 engine with 48V mild hybrid system, full digital cockpit, and OTA (over-the-air) updates. It uses the more efficient 9G-Tronic+ with a new fluid spec (MB 236.17).
As a relatively new model, the W206's long-term reliability in Malaysian conditions is still being established. Parts and service costs are higher than W204/W205.
