Mercedes-Benz C-Class Carbon Buildup — Symptoms & Cleaning Malaysia

Carbon buildup on intake valves is a common issue in direct injection engines like the M274 and M254 used in W205/W206 C-Class. Unlike port-injected engines, GDI engines spray fuel directly into the cylinder — meaning fuel never washes over the intake valves, allowing oil vapour deposits to accumulate.

When does it become a problem?

Carbon typically accumulates significantly after 50,000–70,000 km of normal driving. Short-trip driving (under 15 minutes) and idling in traffic accelerate the buildup. Symptoms include: rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, slightly reduced power and increased fuel consumption.

Cleaning methods available in Malaysia

Walnut blasting: abrasive walnut shell media is blasted through the intake port onto the valves, removing carbon deposits mechanically. This is the most effective method. Cost: RM 600–1,200 for a 4-cylinder engine at 4M Car Care.

Chemical induction cleaning: aerosol chemical is introduced into the intake manifold while the engine runs. Less effective than walnut blasting on heavy deposits, but suitable for preventive cleaning at 40,000–50,000 km. Cost: RM 150–300.
