Brake fluid is the most neglected maintenance item on many Malaysian C-Class vehicles. Unlike engine oil, it doesn't turn black and has no obvious degradation indicator — but its condition directly affects braking safety.
Why brake fluid degrades in Malaysia
Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air. In Malaysia's high-humidity climate, brake fluid absorbs moisture faster than in temperate countries. Water in brake fluid lowers its boiling point dramatically.
When brake fluid moisture content exceeds 3%, its boiling point drops to the point where heavy braking (descending a slope, emergency stop) can boil the fluid — causing a spongy pedal or complete brake fade. This is a safety risk.
Service interval and specification
Mercedes-Benz recommends brake fluid replacement every 2 years, regardless of mileage. The C-Class requires DOT 4 LV (Low Viscosity) — specifically Mercedes part number A000989080710. Standard DOT 4 from the hardware store is not suitable.
