Mercedes-Benz C-Class Battery Replacement — Cost & Registration Malaysia
C-Class W205/W206 requires battery registration (coding) after replacement — skip this and the car will overcharge the new battery. AGM or EFB battery required. Costs and procedure for Malaysia.
Replacing the battery on a W205 or W206 C-Class is not as simple as swapping the battery and driving away. The car's charging system must be recalibrated to the new battery's capacity — a process called IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) coding.
Why battery coding is mandatory
The W205/W206 IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) monitors battery state and adapts the alternator's charging voltage accordingly. When a new battery is installed without coding, the alternator continues to charge as if the old battery (with its degraded capacity) is still fitted — this overcharges the new battery and significantly shortens its life.
Battery specification
C-Class requires an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery — do not use a standard flooded lead-acid battery as a replacement. Common capacities: 70Ah (C180/C200) and 80Ah (C250/C300). Popular brands in Malaysia: Varta (original supplier), Exide EFB, Motolite AGM.
Cost at 4M Car Care: AGM battery + IBS coding: RM 550–900 depending on brand and capacity. Malaysia's heat typically gives AGM batteries a 3–4 year lifespan.
