C-Class Smart Alternator — Not a Simple Swap
W204 and W205 C-Class use smart alternators that communicate with the ECU via LIN bus. Unlike older dumb alternators, the smart alternator adjusts its output based on battery state and driving conditions. When it fails, symptoms include: battery warning light, dimming headlights at idle, and voltage fluctuating between 11.5–12.8V instead of a stable 14.0–14.4V.
IBS Coding After Replacement
After alternator replacement, the IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) must be reset via XENTRY so the ECU relearns the charging profile of the new alternator. Skipping this step can cause the new alternator to be overworked or underutilised, shortening its life.
