Mercedes-Benz A-Class Timing Chain — M260 Reliability Malaysia
The M260 1.3T engine in A180 is a joint development with Renault and has a different architecture from the M271. Known concerns include mild oil consumption at higher mileage. What to watch for in Malaysia.
Both M270 and M260 use a timing chain (not a belt), so there is no scheduled timing belt replacement. However, timing chain stretch and tensioner wear are real concerns on these engines — particularly on early M270 units with high mileage.
Signs of Timing Chain Issues
- Rattling noise from top of engine on cold start — first 5 seconds after ignition
- XENTRY camshaft timing fault codes (P000A, P000B series)
- Rough running or loss of power at high rpm
Timing Chain Service Cost
- Timing chain tensioner replacement only: RM 800–1,200
- Full timing chain + guides + tensioner: RM 2,000–3,500
- Early repair is far cheaper than a jumped chain (engine rebuild territory)
Prevention
Use only correct-spec oil (MB 229.51 or 229.6) and change on time. Low oil level or the wrong oil is the main driver of premature chain wear on M270/M260 engines. Check oil level monthly.
