Mercedes-Benz A-Class Carbon Buildup — M260/M264 Intake Cleaning Malaysia
A-Class M260 and M264 are direct injection engines prone to intake valve carbon deposits. Chemical induction cleaning every 60,000 km is recommended. Symptoms and service cost in Malaysia.

Carbon buildup on intake valves is the most unique and recurring maintenance issue on A-Class W177 — caused entirely by the GDI (direct injection) engine design. Unlike port-injected engines, GDI sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber, so no fuel ever washes the back of the intake valves.
How Carbon Builds Up
Oil mist from the crankcase ventilation (PCV) system enters the intake manifold and coats the intake valves. Without fuel washing the valves clean, this oil bakes onto the hot metal over thousands of kilometres. By 60,000–80,000 km, the carbon deposits restrict airflow into the cylinders, causing rough idle, hesitation and reduced power.
Cleaning Methods
- Walnut shell blasting: most effective — media blasted at high pressure through intake ports strips carbon without damaging valves. Cost: RM 800–1,200
- Manual scraping + chemical soak: less effective than blasting but lower cost (RM 400–600) — suitable for mild buildup
- Intake cleaning additives (in-tank): ineffective for GDI — the additive never reaches the valves
Interval
In Malaysian urban driving (lots of short trips, warm-up idling), carbon accumulates faster than European driving cycles. We recommend carbon inspection at 60,000 km and cleaning if buildup exceeds 1–2 mm on valve stems. After cleaning, the interval resets — plan for cleaning every 60,000–80,000 km for the life of the car.
