The X5 EPS system must provide power assistance for a 2,000+ kg vehicle. The EPS motor is correspondingly larger and heavier than in a 3 Series. It is more durable — failure typically occurs at 100,000+ km. However, when it fails, the motor replacement is expensive. Warning signs: intermittent heavy steering that comes and goes, steering warning light, or steering that feels lighter one way than the other.
