DOT 4 — CBS every 2 years. Heavier X4 generates more brake heat than X3 — fluid moisture absorption faster. M40i performance driving: inspect every 1.5 years. Malaysia cost RM 180–280. Correct brake fluid grade critical — do not use DOT 3 in any BMW.

Hygroscopic Fluid in Humid Malaysia
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air (hygroscopic), and Malaysia's humidity accelerates this process. As water content rises, the boiling point of the fluid drops — during hard braking on highways or downhill (Gombak toll, Karak Highway), boiling fluid causes vapour lock and brake fade. The X4's DOT 4 LV spec fluid should be changed every 2 years without exception. ISTA can read stored brake pedal travel data to detect if a spongy pedal event has occurred.
