F26 xDrive20i N20: timing chain stretch — same issue as F30 3 Series/F32 4 Series. Cold-start rattle = inspect immediately. F26 xDrive35i N55: charge pipe cracks, VANOS. G02 xDrive30i B48: electric water pump, carbon buildup. G02 M40i B58: robust but charge pipe and cooling. Heavier than X3 on same drivetrain — brakes and mounts wear faster.
X4 Common Problems
The BMW X4 shares its platform entirely with the X3 — F26 X4 is built on X3 F25, G02 X4 on X3 G01. All X3 issues apply identically: F26 N20 timing chain risk, G02 B48/B58 electric water pump, xDrive transfer case and differential fluid service. The X4's lower roofline reduces rear headroom compared to X3 but the mechanical package is identical. Choose X4 for style; choose X3 for practicality — maintenance costs and issues are the same.
