Toyota Vios Cooling Coil — Clean vs Replace (Malaysia)
Mouldy smell, weak airflow or warm air from your Vios air-con? The evaporator (cooling coil) may need cleaning or replacing. How to tell and what it costs in Malaysian workshops.

The evaporator coil is inside your dashboard and chills the air. After 3–5 years in Malaysia's humidity, mould builds up on the fins, reducing airflow and causing musty smells.
Clean or Replace?
Cleaning is the right first step — a professional evaporator clean costs RM 200–350 and removes mould, restoring airflow and eliminating odour. Only replace if the coil has a refrigerant leak or physically damaged fins; a new evaporator is RM 400–700 including labour.
Prevention Tips
- Change cabin filter every 15,000 km to reduce debris reaching the evaporator
- Run fan-only mode for 5 minutes before parking to dry the evaporator
- Professional evaporator clean every 2–3 years regardless of symptoms
