Both the FA20DIT (VA WRX) and FA24F (VB WRX) use timing chains instead of a belt — there is no scheduled replacement interval under normal maintenance. The chain is designed to last the engine's lifetime with proper oil maintenance; using the correct viscosity fully synthetic oil and adhering to change intervals is the primary protection. If you notice a rattling noise on cold start that disappears after warm-up, have the chain tensioner and guides inspected promptly as early intervention is far less costly than a full chain replacement.
WRX FA20DIT Timing Chain
The FA20DIT uses twin timing chains (boxer). Turbo + direct injection means higher thermal stress on chain components. Strict 5W-30/0W-20 full synthetic at 7,500–10,000 km is critical. Never use conventional or semi-synthetic oil in the FA20DIT. Carbon deposits from the DI system can clog VVT actuator oil passages — causing timing codes — if oil quality or change intervals lapse.
