Subaru WRX STI Carbon Buildup Service Malaysia
The EJ257 uses port injection, meaning fuel washes the intake valves with every injection cycle — this greatly reduces intake valve carbon buildup compared to direct injection engines. However, the throttle body and TGV (Tumble Generator Valves) can accumulate carbon deposits over time, causing rough idle and reduced throttle response. A throttle body and TGV clean every 50,000–80,000 km maintains optimal performance.

Subaru WRX STI Carbon Buildup
- STI EJ257 port injection: EJ257 uses traditional port injection — fuel spray washes intake valves; carbon buildup on intake valves is NOT a concern on STI; EJ257 does not need walnut blasting for intake valves
- STI throttle body deposits: EJ257 throttle body can accumulate deposits from PCV vapour over high mileage; clean throttle body at 60,000 km; rough idle on STI from throttle body is more common than intake valve carbon
- STI oil separator: EJ257 has an oil separator on PCV system to reduce oil vapour entering intake; if oil separator fails, more oil reaches intake and throttle body — inspect at 80,000 km
- STI carbon myth: do not confuse EJ257 STI with FA20DIT WRX on carbon buildup; STI is port injection and does NOT have DI carbon problem; WRX and Levorg (FA20DIT) are the affected Subaru models
