The Subaru Outback's horizontal boxer engine has specific oil leak points that owners should know. On high-mileage FB25 BS models, both left and right rocker cover gaskets are common seep points, as are the front crankshaft seal and rear main seal. The engine's layout means oil can drip downward in different directions compared to conventional vertical engines, making the source less obvious. A pressure leak test and UV dye inspection at a Subaru-experienced workshop gives the most accurate diagnosis.

- Outback oil leak common points: same as Forester — rocker cover gaskets (FB25 or EZ36), front and rear crankshaft seals, oil pan; EZ36 H6 has 6 rocker covers — higher gasket area means more potential leak points
- Outback EZ36 H6 oil leak: H6 3.6L engine with 6 cylinders has more gasket surfaces; if Outback EZ36 has oil smell after long drive, inspect all 6 rocker cover gaskets and both cam seal areas; older EZ36 above 120,000 km may show multiple gasket seepage
- Outback oil leak and EyeSight: oil leak dripping from engine onto hot turbo or exhaust creates white smoke in engine bay; if smoke visible at windscreen base — this can obstruct EyeSight camera; fix leak before EyeSight faults appear
- Outback oil leak inspection: park on clean concrete overnight; check for oil drip pattern under car; front drip under engine = front crank seal; rear drip = rear seal or oil pan; side drip = rocker cover; helps technician target diagnosis
