Subaru Outback Head Gasket Malaysia
The FB25 engine in BS Outback models has a less severe head gasket concern than the older EJ25, but it remains something Malaysian owners of high-mileage units should monitor. Neglected coolant maintenance is the primary accelerant of head gasket failure. Warning signs include a sweet coolant smell, white exhaust smoke, coolant level dropping without visible leaks, and milky oil on the dipstick. As a pre-purchase inspection step on any BS Outback, perform a coolant pressure test and check the oil for emulsification — two simple checks that can save a very expensive repair.

Subaru Outback Head Gasket
- Outback BP/BH EJ25 head gasket: BH (1999–2003) and BP (2004–2009) Outback with EJ25 have notorious head gasket failure — same issue as SG Forester; any EJ25 Outback above 80,000 km should have head gasket history confirmed
- Outback BR/BS FB25 head gasket: BR (2010+) with FB25 resolved the issue; FB25 Outback is NOT affected by the EJ25 head gasket problem; buyers looking at BR/BS Outback should not worry about head gasket — focus on CVT and service history instead
- Outback head gasket repair: if EJ25 Outback head gasket needs replacement — use MLS (multi-layer steel) gasket; re-surface cylinder head if warped; install ARP head studs instead of bolts; replace coolant and oil after repair
