The HR15DE uses a timing chain — no belt replacement needed. The chain is designed to last the life of the engine with proper oil maintenance. Symptoms of a worn or stretched chain: rattling noise on cold start that fades after a few seconds, check engine light with timing-related codes. The main cause of premature chain wear is infrequent oil changes or low oil level. At 100,000+ km, have the tensioner and chain inspected if cold-start rattle is present.
Latio Timing Chain
The HR15DE and HR16DE use timing chains. With regular oil changes at 10,000 km intervals using 5W-30 semi-synthetic or better, the chain should be trouble-free. Older Latio models with deferred maintenance may exhibit cold-start rattle — inspect the VTC actuator and chain tensioner at your next service if this occurs.
