Nissan Almera Common Problems Malaysia — B17 / N18
B17 (VG20): timing chain rattle on cold start at high mileage, A/C blower motor failure, 4-speed AT hesitation. N18 (1.0T): CVT shudder in early batches (software update available), turbo engine oil consumption in early production units. CVT fluid neglect is the top cause of expensive failures in both generations — change Nissan NS-3 every 40,000 km without fail.

N18 HR10DDT Timing Chain Noise
The 2020+ Almera N18 HR10DDT 1.0 turbo has a timing chain on the front of the engine. Early rattling on cold start typically points to a worn chain tensioner or low oil pressure at startup. Using the correct 0W-20 fully synthetic oil and not exceeding 10,000 km oil change intervals helps prevent premature wear.
CVT Overheating — Almera B17
The B17 Almera's Jatco CVT is known to overheat in heavy Klang Valley traffic. Symptoms include hesitation, limp mode, and a burning smell. Changing CVT fluid every 40,000 km (not the 'lifetime fill' claim) significantly extends gearbox life. Use only Nissan NS-3 or NS-2 fluid.
N18 Turbo Oil Consumption
Some N18 Almera owners report above-normal oil consumption between changes, especially if oil change intervals are stretched. The HR10DDT runs best on 0W-20 full synthetic; do not substitute with 5W-30 as it can cause increased consumption and carbon buildup on intake valves at high mileage.
