Mercedes-Benz uses smart alternators that vary charging voltage based on load and battery state — a standard voltmeter test is insufficient for diagnosis. Use an oscilloscope or proper BMS scanner to test charging quality. Common failure: voltage regulator overheating in Malaysia's ambient temperature. Alternator replacement costs RM 600–1,400 for genuine or remanufactured units. Always test the battery at the same time — a failing battery overworks the alternator and can shorten its life. Coding the new alternator is required on W205/W206 models.
