Toyota Vellfire Brake Warning Light On — Full Brake Renewal + Service at 116,474 KM
This Vellfire at 116,474 KM had the brake warning light triggered by worn pads. We replaced all four brake pads, front and rear brake discs, and performed an engine oil service and coolant top-up. All warning lights cleared, full braking confidence restored.

A Toyota Vellfire at 116,474 KM came to 4M CarCare in Bandar Sri Damansara. The brake wear warning light had appeared on the instrument cluster, prompting the owner to book a service. The Vellfire is a heavy premium MPV — its kerb weight of over 2,000 KG means the brake system works significantly harder than on a typical family sedan, and brake components wear faster as a result.
Services performed
All four brake pads replacement — front and rear pads replaced with OEM-grade items. On a Vellfire the front pads carry roughly 70% of the braking load due to weight transfer under braking; both axles are replaced together for balanced, even stopping.
Front and rear brake disc replacement — discs were measured and found to be at or below minimum thickness. New discs fitted simultaneously with new pads; a worn disc with new pads leads to uneven contact, vibration and accelerated pad wear.
DOT 4 brake fluid replacement — brake fluid is hygroscopic; it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere over time, which lowers its boiling point. On a heavy MPV that generates more heat in the brake system per stop, degraded low-boiling-point fluid can vaporise under hard braking (vapour lock), causing a suddenly soft or unresponsive pedal. Replaced with fresh DOT 4.
Front brake caliper service — calipers stripped, pistons and guides cleaned and lubricated. Seized caliper pistons are common on vehicles driven mostly in stop-go city traffic; a sticking caliper keeps the pad dragging against the disc, causing rapid wear, heat build-up and pulling to one side.
Engine oil service (Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40) with oil filter — the engine oil was overdue and was completed alongside the brake work.
Coolant top-up — coolant level was slightly low; topped up with the correct red long-life OAT coolant to protect the aluminium engine components.
Why heavy MPV brakes need more frequent attention
Physics does not negotiate: braking force equals mass times deceleration. A fully-loaded Vellfire at highway speed carries roughly 2.5 times the kinetic energy of a 1,200 KG sedan at the same speed. All of that energy must be converted to heat by the brake system. More heat means more wear per kilometre on pads and discs.
For Vellfire and Alphard owners: do not wait for the warning light. By the time the electronic sensor triggers, the pads are at their absolute minimum. Building a regular inspection every 30,000–40,000 KM into your service schedule will catch wear before it reaches the discs — and save the cost of disc replacement.
