Power steering problems: heavy or noisy steering explained
Steering suddenly heavy, whining when you turn, or a leak under the car? Here are the common power steering problems — hydraulic and electric (EPS) — and what to do.

Power steering makes the wheel light and easy to turn. Older cars use a hydraulic system (a pump, fluid and belt), while most newer cars — Perodua Myvi and Bezza, Proton Saga and X50, Honda City and more — use electric power steering (EPS) with a motor instead. When either system has a problem, the wheel gets heavy or noisy. Here's how to read the signs.
Common signs of trouble
The steering suddenly feels heavy or stiff, especially at low speed or when parking.
A whining or groaning noise when you turn the wheel (common on hydraulic systems).
Reddish power steering fluid leaking under the car (hydraulic systems only).
An EPS or steering warning light on the dashboard (electric systems).
Vibration in the wheel, or steering that doesn't return to centre smoothly.
Why not to ignore it
Heavy steering is dangerous in an emergency, and a small hydraulic leak can run the pump dry and destroy it. On EPS cars the fault is usually electronic and needs a diagnostic scan to pinpoint. Either way, getting it checked early is cheaper and safer.
