Mercedes E200 W213 Aircond Suddenly Dead + Rattling Noise — Compressor Replaced (Sri Damansara)
A 2018 Mercedes E200 W213 owner's aircond stopped cooling entirely with a loud rattle on startup. XENTRY diagnostics confirmed compressor failure. We replaced the compressor and receiver drier, recharged with R-134a. Vent temperature back to 8 degrees C — cold again.

A 2018 Mercedes-Benz E200 W213 owner arrived at 4M CarCare in Sri Damansara with a total aircond failure. The system had stopped cooling entirely overnight, and there was a loud rattling noise from the engine bay every time the aircond was switched on — then silence once it was switched off. The symptoms pointed clearly toward compressor failure.
Diagnosis
XENTRY diagnostic scan — Confirmed a fault code for the aircond compressor electromagnetic clutch. The W213 E200 uses a variable-displacement compressor controlled electronically; XENTRY can read the exact component fault, saving time and guesswork.
Refrigerant pressure check — Low-side pressure was abnormally high while high-side was low, consistent with a seized or failed compressor that is no longer pumping refrigerant through the system.
Visual inspection — confirmed the compressor clutch face showed signs of heat damage and the shaft would not rotate freely, confirming internal seizure.
Components replaced
Aircond compressor (W213 E200 specific) — a failed compressor must always be replaced, not repaired. Internally seized compressors shed metal debris into the refrigerant lines; if the debris is not properly flushed, it will contaminate and seize the new compressor within weeks.
Receiver drier — when a compressor fails, the desiccant inside the receiver drier absorbs moisture from the system. This desiccant becomes saturated and must be replaced at the same time as the compressor; running the new compressor through a saturated drier risks moisture circulating and damaging the expansion valve.
Full system flush — refrigerant lines were flushed to remove any metal debris shed by the failed compressor before the new unit was fitted.
Vacuum and recharge with R-134a — the system was pulled to deep vacuum to remove moisture, then recharged to the exact specification for the W213.
System pressure and performance test — post-charge, vent temperature was measured at approximately 8°C, confirming full cooling restoration.
Why compressors fail — and how to prevent it
The most common cause of premature compressor failure is running the aircond system when refrigerant is low. Low refrigerant means the compressor is not receiving adequate lubrication — the oil circulates with the refrigerant, and without sufficient refrigerant flow the compressor runs dry and the internal parts seize.
If your Mercedes aircond is blowing slightly warm, or you notice it losing its cooling power over time, book a refrigerant pressure check early — a refrigerant top-up is a fraction of the cost of a compressor replacement.
