Mazda CX-5 KF Bumpy Ride & Knocking Noise — Full Suspension Overhaul at 77,082 KM
The CX-5 owner noticed a deteriorating ride quality and knocking sounds over bumps. We replaced front shock absorber assemblies, strut mounts, bearings, spring pads, stabiliser bar bushings and links, and lower arms — plus oil service, ATF and 4-wheel alignment. Ride quality fully restored.

A Mazda CX-5 KF 2.0 at 77,082 KM came to 4M CarCare in Sri Damansara. The owner reported a noticeably rougher ride over bumps compared to when the car was newer, along with a knocking sound from the front suspension — especially over speed bumps and uneven road surfaces. A comprehensive suspension inspection was carried out before any work was recommended.
Services and parts replaced
Engine oil service (ZUS SZO 5W-30 full synthetic) with oil filter and drain plug washer — the CX-5's SKYACTIV-G 2.0 engine requires a quality full synthetic at the correct viscosity for its variable valve timing system and fuel injection.
Automatic transmission fluid (ATF FZ) replacement — Mazda's 6-speed automatic uses proprietary ATF FZ fluid. At 77,082 KM the fluid had darkened significantly beyond its service life; fresh fluid restores shift smoothness and reduces internal wear.
Fan belts replacement (3PK798 & 6PK962) — both the aircond drive belt and the alternator/accessories belt were showing surface cracking. A broken belt causes immediate loss of cooling or charging; replacing them proactively avoids a roadside failure.
Front shock absorber assemblies replacement — worn absorbers lose their damping ability; the coil spring continues to compress and rebound but without control, causing the bouncy, floating sensation the owner described.
Strut top mounts, bearings, spring pads and dust covers replacement — the top mount is the interface between the shock absorber and the chassis. A worn mount allows micro-movement and produces the knocking sound over bumps; the bearing inside allows the spring to rotate smoothly during steering. Both fail together and are replaced as a set.
Front stabiliser bar bushings and end links replacement — the anti-roll bar (stabiliser bar) connects left and right wheels to resist body roll in corners. Worn rubber bushings allow the bar to move in its mounts, generating a clunking noise over bumps and in corners. The end links connect the bar to the suspension struts; worn links cause a similar knock.
Front lower control arms replacement — the lower arm carries the geometry of the front wheel: its bushings control the precise fore-and-aft and lateral position of the wheel under all loads. Worn lower arm bushings produce a vague, imprecise steering feel and a low-frequency thudding over rough surfaces.
Tyre balancing and four-wheel alignment — mandatory after any suspension component replacement. Alignment ensures all four wheels point at the correct angles relative to each other and to the road; incorrect alignment causes rapid tyre wear and the car to pull to one side.
Why 70,000–80,000 KM is the key interval for CX-5 suspension
Malaysia's road conditions — dense speed bumps, potholes and uneven road joins — accelerate rubber component wear significantly compared to the European roads that vehicle suspension is typically designed and rated for. The CX-5 KF's suspension rubber (bushings, top mounts, end links) typically begins to degrade noticeably between 60,000 and 90,000 KM under Malaysian conditions.
Owners who wait until something actually breaks typically end up replacing more components in a single visit — and lose money on emergency towing. A proactive check at 60,000–70,000 KM is worth booking.
