High-pitched squeal when braking — this is the wear indicator, a small metal tab that contacts the disc when pads are nearly used up. It means pads need replacing soon — not an emergency yet, but within the next few hundred kilometres.

Grinding metal-on-metal sound — the pads have worn through completely; the metal backing plate is now contacting the disc directly. This damages the disc rapidly and needs immediate attention.

Shudder or vibration through the brake pedal — usually caused by warped or unevenly worn discs. The disc thickness varies around its circumference, causing the pedal to pulse with each wheel rotation under braking.
