BMW F10 520d Oil Stains Under the Car — Valve Cover Gasket & Gearbox Seal Fixed
The owner noticed oil stains on the driveway under his 2013 BMW 520d. Inspection found a hardened valve cover gasket and a weeping gearbox output oil seal. Both fixed in one visit, plus an oil top-up. We diagnose first, then fix only what is actually leaking.

The owner of a 2013 BMW 520d F10 (N47 diesel, approximately 130,000 KM) noticed oil stains appearing on the floor of his parking space. He was unsure whether it was engine oil or gearbox oil. We carried out a thorough inspection to identify the exact source before recommending any work.
What inspection found
Valve cover (rocker cover) gasket — hardened and cracked from age and heat cycles. Engine oil was seeping from the top of the engine and running down the block. A characteristic burning oil smell after driving was the first sign the owner had noticed.
Gearbox (automatic transmission) right output shaft oil seal — a minor weep from the right-side output flange. The volume was small but consistent, contributing to the floor stain.
Engine oil level — approximately 0.5 litres low due to the valve cover leak. Topped up to the correct level as part of the repair.
Repair work completed
Valve cover gasket replacement (including intake camshaft oil seal) — the complete gasket set was replaced, not just the perimeter seal. The camshaft oil seal at the front of the valve cover is a separate failure point that is accessed during the same job and should be renewed at the same time.
Automatic gearbox right output oil seal replacement — accessed from underneath, the worn seal was pressed out and a new seal pressed in. The gearbox oil level was checked and found within range, so a full ATF change was not required.
Engine exterior cleaning — old oil residue was degreased from the engine block and underbay to allow easy monitoring. If any new drips appear in the future, they will be visible immediately.
Why oil leaks should be fixed promptly
A small leak today becomes a larger leak as the hardened gasket flexes further and as oil pressure finds additional paths. Unchecked leaks can contaminate the serpentine belt (causing belt slip and failure), corrode wiring harnesses, and create fire risk near hot exhaust components.
Catching leaks while they are still small — before they worsen and contaminate other components — is always cheaper than waiting. At 4M CarCare we inspect first and quote honestly. If something does not actually need replacing, we will not replace it.
