BMW 218i Rear Brakes Worn — Warning Light On, Full Brake Set Replaced (97,718 KM)

The BMW brake warning light had been on for weeks. We confirmed rear pads and discs were beyond limits and replaced the full rear brake set — pads, discs and wear sensor — along with a Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 oil service. Full braking confidence restored.

BMW 218i Rear Brakes Worn — Warning Light On, Full Brake Set Replaced (97,718 KM)

A BMW 218i from Bandar Sri Damansara came to 4M CarCare at 97,718 KM for a scheduled oil service — and a brake warning light that had been on for weeks. Inspection confirmed the rear pads and discs were worn beyond the minimum, so we handled both in a single visit.

Services performed

Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 full synthetic engine oil — BMW's turbocharged four-cylinder requires a high-quality full synthetic to protect under heat and load.

Engine oil filter replacement — changed simultaneously to keep the new oil circulating through a clean system.

Rear brake pads replacement (OEM-grade) — restoring full braking force and eliminating the wear indicator squeal.

Rear brake disc replacement — at this mileage the disc surface was scored and below minimum thickness; fitting new pads on a worn disc shortens pad life and causes uneven braking.

Rear brake pad wear sensor replacement — BMW uses electronic wear sensors that trigger the warning light; replacing the sensor clears the dash warning and gives accurate monitoring for the next set.

Post-service brake bedding procedure — brake pads require a controlled break-in cycle to seat evenly against the new disc; this ensures consistent, fade-free braking from day one.

Why replace pads and discs together on a BMW

BMW's brake system is engineered as a matched set. Fitting new pads onto a grooved or thin disc means the pad contacts only the raised ridges, reducing effective braking area and generating heat unevenly. The new pads also wear much faster against the uneven surface.

Doing both together also saves labour cost — the wheel and brake assembly only come apart once, rather than paying for two separate strip-downs.

At 4M CarCare we inspect both before recommending. If the disc still has enough material and is within spec, we will say so — only the pads get replaced. We do not swap parts that do not need replacing.
