Audi A4 2.0T Cold-Start Chain Rattle — Timing Chain Replaced Before It Skips (Sri Damansara)

The owner of a 2016 Audi A4 B9 2.0 TFSI (EA888 Gen 3) noticed a 2–3 second metallic rattling noise every time the engine started from cold — and then silence once the engine warmed up. This is a well-known early warning on the EA888 engine: the timing chain tensioner is losing pressure before the oil has fully circulated after a cold start.

VCDS scan confirmed fault codes related to camshaft timing deviation — the chain was stretching and skipping under low oil pressure at cold start.

Physical inspection confirmed the plastic tensioner guide was worn, the tensioner itself had weakened, and the chain had developed visible slack when manually checked. The chain had not yet jumped a tooth — catching it at this stage was the key.

Timing chain (OEM-specification) — the stretched chain is replaced entirely; re-tensioning a stretched chain is not a lasting fix.

Chain tensioner — the hydraulic tensioner that keeps constant pressure on the chain via engine oil; the worn unit was replaced with a new OEM-grade tensioner.

Upper and lower timing chain guides — the plastic guide rails that keep the chain aligned; both were worn and replaced as a set.

Engine oil and filter — EA888 timing chain wear is heavily linked to oil quality and change intervals; fresh oil was fitted immediately after the timing chain work.

A timing chain that has only stretched can be replaced at reasonable cost. A timing chain that has jumped a tooth — or multiple teeth — can bend intake and exhaust valves against the pistons. Valve replacement, cylinder head machining, and the associated labour can cost many times more than a timing chain kit.

The rule: if your EA888-engined car (Audi A4, A3, VW Golf, Passat, Tiguan) rattles on cold start, do not ignore it and do not wait. Book a diagnostic scan — if it is caught early, it is a manageable repair.
