Signs of a failing water pump
The water pump circulates coolant to keep the engine cool. When it fails, overheating and expensive engine damage can follow. Here are the warning signs.

The water pump pushes coolant around the engine to carry heat away to the radiator. If it fails, the engine can overheat quickly — and overheating leads to some of the most expensive damage there is (warped head, blown head gasket). Here are the warning signs of a failing water pump.
Warning signs
Coolant leaking under the front of the car (often green, red or blue).
The temperature gauge running high or the engine overheating.
A whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine (worn pump bearing).
Steam or a sweet smell from the engine bay.
A smart time to replace it
On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt. If your car is due for a timing belt, it's often smart to replace the water pump at the same time — the labour overlaps, so you save money and avoid a second job later.
