Volkswagen Beetle Aircond & Service (169,465 KM · Sri Damansara)

This white Volkswagen Beetle arrived at 4M Carcare with 169,465 KM on the odometer. At this mileage, the original aircond components — evaporator coil, expansion valve, and heater coil — were due for replacement. The owner also needed the rear left lighting repaired and a coolant refresh. The scope of work required a full dashboard removal to properly access the evaporator housing.

Aircond Cooling Coil (Evaporator) — 2 Months Warranty: The evaporator coil sits inside the dashboard and is where cabin air is cooled. Over time, evaporator coils develop micro-cracks and refrigerant leaks, causing the aircond to blow warm. A new evaporator coil restores proper cooling performance. This replacement comes with a 2-month warranty.

Aircond Expansion Valve: The expansion valve regulates the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator. A stuck or leaking expansion valve causes the aircond system to perform inconsistently — too cold, not cold enough, or icing up. Replacement ensures the refrigerant flow is properly controlled for efficient cooling.

Heater Coil: The heater coil (heater core) circulates engine coolant through a small radiator behind the dashboard to provide cabin heat when needed. A leaking heater core causes a sweet smell inside the cabin, foggy windows, and coolant loss. Replacement requires the same dashboard removal access as the evaporator — so it makes sense to do both together.

O-Ring Replacement: O-rings seal the connections between aircond lines and components. Old, hardened O-rings cause refrigerant leaks. All relevant O-rings were replaced as part of the evaporator and expansion valve work to ensure a leak-free system.

Air Filter Replacement: The engine air filter prevents dust and debris from entering the intake. At 169,465 KM, the air filter was due for replacement to maintain optimal airflow and combustion efficiency.

Aircond Recovery & Flushing: Before fitting the new evaporator and expansion valve, the old refrigerant is recovered (not vented) and the system is flushed to remove contaminated oil and debris. Fresh refrigerant and the correct amount of compressor oil are recharged after the repair.

Longlife Red Coolant 2.5L: The Volkswagen Beetle uses G12 or G12+ long-life coolant (red/pink). Using the wrong coolant type in a VW engine causes internal corrosion and sealant degradation. The correct OEM-spec red long-life coolant was used to protect the cooling system.

Dashboard Removal & Installation: Accessing the evaporator and heater coil on the Volkswagen Beetle requires a full dashboard removal. This is a labour-intensive job — the dashboard houses the instrument cluster, climate controls, wiring harness, airbags, and structural brackets. Proper disassembly and reassembly ensures nothing is damaged and all systems work correctly after the repair.

Rear LH Tail Lamp, Brake Bulb Socket & Brake Bulb: The rear left tail lamp assembly, bulb socket, and brake bulb were all replaced to restore full rear lighting function — important for road safety and to avoid summons.

Both components are located deep inside the dashboard — to reach either one, the entire dashboard must be removed. Labour for dashboard removal is the same whether you do one job or both. Replacing both in the same visit avoids paying dashboard removal labour costs twice, and eliminates the risk of the heater coil failing shortly after and requiring another full dashboard removal.
