Tyre Puncture: When Can You Repair It and When Must You Replace It?
Not every puncture needs a new tyre, but not every puncture can be safely repaired either. Here's how to decide — including why the roadside plug-only repair is not a permanent fix.

When a puncture can be repaired
All of these conditions must be met for a safe repair: • Puncture is in the central tread area (not the shoulder or sidewall) • Puncture diameter does not exceed 6 mm • Tyre has not been run flat (driving on a flat tyre damages the internal structure) • Tread depth is still adequate and the tyre is not past its service life
When you must replace the tyre
• Sidewall puncture: the sidewall bears the vehicle's weight and driving stress — any sidewall damage cannot be repaired. This is the single most important rule. • Run-flat tyre that has run flat: the internal structure is damaged after running without pressure — typically cannot be repaired. • Puncture in the shoulder area (the curved zone near the sidewall) • Multiple punctures or evidence of a previous repair
Plug-only vs mushroom plug repair
The common roadside plug-only repair (stuffing a rubber strip into the hole from outside) is a temporary fix — not safe for long-term use because it doesn't seal the tread structure from inside.
The correct permanent repair is a mushroom plug + internal patch — remove the tyre, fill from inside with a mushroom-shaped repair unit, and bond a patch on the inner liner. This seals both layers properly. Cost: approximately RM 25–40.
Cost reference
Mushroom plug repair: RM 25–40. New tyre: economy/national brands RM 150–250 each, Japanese mid-size RM 250–450, European cars RM 350–700+, depending on size and brand.
