Transmission Slipping: What It Feels Like, Why It Happens and What to Do

Revs shoot up but the car barely accelerates, or gear changes feel delayed and jerky — these are signs of transmission slipping. Catching it early saves thousands in repair bills.

Transmission Slipping: What It Feels Like, Why It Happens and What to Do

What is transmission slipping?

Transmission slipping is where the gearbox fails to properly transfer engine torque to the wheels — the engine revs climb but the car barely accelerates. It's similar to pressing the clutch but not fully releasing it. Slipping can occur in automatic (AT), CVT, dual-clutch (DSG/DCT) and even manual transmissions (worn clutch).

Common symptoms

• RPM climbs but vehicle speed doesn't follow: pressing the accelerator sees the rev counter rise quickly but the car accelerates slowly — like spinning in neutral • Delayed or jerky shifts: noticeably longer gear changes than before, or a distinct jerk between gears • CVT slipping is more obvious on hills: feels like the transmission is 'skating' uphill • Jerk when engaging reverse: obvious shock when shifting P to R

Common causes

Degraded or low ATF: the most common and easiest-to-fix cause. When ATF breaks down, its friction coefficient changes and clutch packs slip. Regular ATF changes are the most effective prevention.

Worn clutch pack (Clutch Pack): high mileage or prolonged poor fluid causes internal clutch wear — requires gearbox rebuild. Solenoid fault: a malfunctioning shift solenoid gives the ECU incorrect shift timing; diagnostic will show related fault codes.

What to do

Step 1: computer diagnostic to read fault codes, combined with a road test to characterise the slipping pattern (low speed, high speed, specific gear or constant). Step 2: check ATF condition and level — if the oil is already black or smells burnt, try a fluid change first and see if it improves.

Transmission problems caught early cost far less — an ATF change may run a few hundred ringgit, but waiting until the clutch packs are fully worn can mean several thousand for a gearbox overhaul. Come to 4M Car Care for a diagnosis. WhatsApp to book.
