How Often Should You Flush Your Radiator? Malaysia Climate Guide
Coolant doesn't last forever. Over time it turns acidic and starts corroding the cooling system from inside. Here's when to flush it and the signs your coolant is already past due.
Why flush the radiator?
Coolant circulates in high heat for years; its anti-corrosion additives gradually deplete, pH drops and it turns acidic, attacking the metal surfaces of the radiator, hoses, water pump and internal water passages. Degraded coolant also becomes darker and less efficient at transferring heat.
Malaysia's year-round heat means engines run hotter, the coolant carries a greater thermal load, and additives deplete faster than in temperate climates.
Recommended replacement interval
Generally every 2 years or 40,000 KM (whichever comes first). Some long-life coolants can last 5 years or 100,000 KM — follow the owner's manual. Regardless of mileage, replace immediately if the coolant has turned dark or cloudy.
A flush (vs simply draining and refilling) uses distilled water to rinse the system, removing residual old coolant and sediment so the fresh coolant works in a clean circuit.
Signs your coolant is overdue
• Coolant in the reservoir looks dark brown or cloudy compared to new fluid • Engine temperature occasionally runs higher than normal with no other cooling fault • Scale or rust deposits visible inside the radiator cap • Faint sweet smell in the engine bay (coolant vapour) • Heater output weaker than usual
