Volkswagen Golf MK7 (2012–2018) Polymann Bushing Upgrade — Restoring the Precision That Makes a Golf a Golf

The Volkswagen Golf MK7 — built on the MQB platform and produced from 2012 to 2018 — is the benchmark compact hatchback for a reason. Whether it is the standard 1.4 TSI, the GTI, or the Golf R, the MK7 is engineered to deliver a precise, satisfying drive that no similarly sized car from a mass-market brand can match. That precision comes from a well-sorted chassis, a well-tuned steering rack, and — critically — the geometry held by the front lower arm bushings. At high mileage, those bushings wear, and the Golf starts to feel less like a Golf.

PPPB 35993 — Front Lower Arm Bushing Kit: The Golf MK7 uses a MacPherson strut front suspension, with the front lower control arm located to the subframe through two rubber bushings — one at the front pivot and one at the rear. These bushings take the brunt of braking, cornering, and road-impact forces through the front axle every day. On the MK7, wear in these bushings manifests as a loss of steering directness — the wheel feels slightly numb on turn-in, there is a small delay between input and response, and the car does not feel as planted in fast corners as it once did. Some owners also notice a low-frequency knock over sharp bumps or road joints. PPPB 35993 replaces both front lower arm bushings with polyurethane units that are stiffer under load, holding the arm's position more precisely throughout the steering arc while retaining enough compliance for daily comfort.

For standard Golf 1.4 TSI owners, bushing replacement is primarily about restoring the factory feel. For GTI and Golf R owners, it is also about recovering the sharper steering response and front-end grip that makes these cars rewarding to drive quickly. Polyurethane holds geometry more precisely than worn rubber under the higher cornering loads the GTI and R generate — particularly noticeable at the point of turn-in, where a well-bushed Golf darts for the apex and a soft-bushed Golf hesitates.

Replacing the front lower arm bushings on the Golf MK7 requires a wheel alignment check afterwards. New bushings allow the arm to settle into its correct geometry, shifting the camber and toe readings from the worn-in position. A full four-wheel alignment after installation ensures the Golf steers straight, wears its tyres evenly, and the precision of the new bushings is fully realised.
