Polymann Polyurethane Bushings — Why Upgrade and What's the Difference?

Bushings are small rubber or polyurethane sleeves fitted at suspension and steering pivot points throughout your car — control arms, sway bars, subframes, tie rods, and more. Their job is to cushion movement between metal components, absorb road vibration, and maintain the precise geometry that keeps your wheels pointing in the right direction.

When bushings wear out, you notice it: knocking sounds over bumps, imprecise steering, the car pulling slightly, or excessive body roll in corners. Most drivers blame their shock absorbers or tyres first — but worn bushings are frequently the root cause.

Factory bushings are made from rubber for a reason: rubber is soft, quiet, and comfortable. It absorbs small road imperfections without transmitting them into the cabin. But rubber also degrades — it cracks, hardens, and eventually collapses under repeated stress, heat, and exposure to oil and road chemicals. Most rubber bushings start showing wear between 80,000–150,000 KM.

Polyurethane bushings are harder and more dimensionally stable than rubber. They do not crack or collapse under heat and stress in the same way. The trade-off is that they transmit slightly more road feel into the cabin — which most drivers experience as more connected, responsive handling rather than harshness.

Any car with worn rubber bushings will benefit — but certain situations make the upgrade particularly worthwhile:

High mileage vehicles (100,000 KM+): Factory rubber bushings at this mileage are typically degraded. Replacing them with polyurethane restores the handling to better than new.

Performance-oriented drivers: If you enjoy spirited driving, mountain roads, or track days, polyurethane gives you sharper turn-in, more consistent cornering balance, and better feel for what the tyres are doing.

Cars with suspension noise or vague steering: If your wheel alignment keeps going out quickly after a reset, or you feel the car wandering on the highway, worn bushings are a likely cause. Alignment alone will not fix a geometry problem caused by collapsed bushings.

Most drivers notice the difference immediately on the first drive. The most common feedback:

Steering feels tighter and more direct. The delay between turning the wheel and the car responding is reduced. Highway lane changes feel more confident.

Less body roll in corners. The car sits flatter through bends, which also reduces the stress on your tyres and allows them to work more efficiently.

Knocking sounds disappear. If worn bushings were causing suspension noise, the new polyurethane pieces eliminate the play that causes the knock.

After installation, a wheel alignment check is recommended to ensure the suspension geometry is set correctly with the new bushings in place.
