Signs of worn engine mountings

Engine mountings hold the engine in place and absorb its vibration so you don't feel it in the cabin. Made partly of rubber, they wear out over time — and when they do, you feel it as shaking and hear it as clunks. Here's how to tell when they need replacing.

Noticeable shaking or vibration at idle, especially in D with the brake pressed.

A clunk or thud when starting, shutting off, or shifting between D and R.

A jerky or harsh feeling when accelerating or taking off.

More engine noise and vibration coming through the steering wheel and seats.

Worn mountings let the engine move more than it should, which stresses connected parts — hoses, pipes, the exhaust and drivetrain — and makes the car uncomfortable. Replacing a worn mount early is far cheaper than fixing the damage excess movement causes.
