DSG / dual-clutch: how often to change the oil?
VW, Audi and Porsche often use DSG dual-clutch gearboxes. Do they need servicing? How often to change the oil? Here's the answer.

The DSG (dual-clutch gearbox; Audi calls it S-tronic) shifts fast and performs well, and is standard on many European cars. But unlike a traditional auto, poor maintenance can cause jerking or even mechatronic failure, which isn't cheap to fix.
Does the DSG need oil changes?
Yes. Despite some "lifetime maintenance-free" claims, in practice changing the gearbox oil and filter periodically clearly extends life and reduces jerking. Wet DSGs especially should have regular oil changes.
How often?
Generally every 40,000–60,000 km for the DSG oil and filter. With heavy traffic and stop-go driving, do it a little sooner.
These symptoms mean it's time to check
Jerking or shaking when moving off or at low speed.
A jolt or hesitation when shifting.
A gearbox warning on the dashboard.
If any of these appear, get a diagnostic and gearbox-oil check as soon as possible.
