How often should you change brake fluid?
Brake fluid absorbs water over time, making the brakes feel soft — or even fail. How often should it be changed, and what are the signs? Here's this often-overlooked safety item explained.

Brake fluid is one of the most overlooked maintenance items — yet it's critical to your safety. Over time it absorbs moisture from the air, which lowers its boiling point and can make the brake pedal feel soft, or even fade during hard braking. Here's what you need to know.
How often should it be changed?
As a rule of thumb, change brake fluid every 2 years or about 40,000 km — check your owner's manual. In humid Malaysia the fluid absorbs water faster, so don't stretch it. We can test the fluid's moisture content to confirm whether it's due.
Signs your brake fluid needs attention
A soft or spongy brake pedal, or one that sinks toward the floor.
Brakes feel less sharp, especially after repeated hard braking.
The brake fluid in the reservoir looks dark or dirty instead of clear/amber.
The brake warning light comes on (could also mean low fluid or worn pads).
