Brake Caliper Sticking: Symptoms, Causes and Why It's Dangerous
A sticking brake caliper keeps the brake pad lightly pressed against the disc even when you release the pedal. This causes the wheel to run hot, pulls the car sideways and wears pads fast.
What is a brake caliper?
The brake caliper contains pistons; when you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure pushes the pistons to clamp the brake disc. When you release the pedal, the pistons retract and allow the disc to spin freely. A sticking caliper means the piston or guide pin doesn't fully retract after release, so the brake pad stays lightly dragging on the disc.
Common symptoms
• Car pulls to one side: continuous single-side drag pulls the car that way • One wheel or disc runs very hot: compare by holding your hand near (not touching) each wheel after driving — significantly hotter on one side is a red flag • Burning smell: sustained friction generates heat that scorches the pad material • Heavy or dragging pedal feel: resistance while driving as if something is being towed • Brake pads on one side wear much faster than the other
Why does it stick?
Most commonly: corroded guide pins — the caliper slides on two pins; if they rust they can't move freely. Next: seized piston — if the dust boot tears, moisture and dirt enter and the piston rusts solid. Also: swollen brake hose internally, which doesn't release hydraulic pressure fully.
Malaysia's high humidity accelerates metal corrosion, and rainy-season road splash makes caliper problems more common here than in temperate countries.
How to fix and prevent
Mild sticking: clean and re-grease the guide pins (high-temp grease) and it usually recovers. Severe rust or a seized piston requires caliper rebuild or replacement. In Malaysia, caliper repair costs approximately RM 150–400 per corner (European cars more).
Prevention: regular brake inspections; whenever fitting new brake pads, clean the guide pins and apply fresh grease at the same time.
