Proton Saga Timing Belt — Critical Maintenance
The Proton Saga 1.3L VVT CAMPRO engine uses a rubber timing belt — NOT a chain. This belt MUST be changed at 60,000 km or every 4 years, whichever comes first. The CAMPRO is an interference engine: if the belt snaps, pistons hit open valves causing catastrophic damage (RM 3,000–8,000 to repair or engine replacement). Always replace belt + tensioner + idler + water pump together. The water pump is driven by the belt — replacing everything at once saves labour.
