Standard wax thermostat on the NR-VE. Slow warmup (stuck open) or overheating (stuck closed) are the two failure modes. Inexpensive and easy to replace.

- Stuck open: slow warm-up, lower fuel economy; stuck closed: overheating
- Replace if temperature gauge consistently reads low or high
- Replace when doing 100,000 km coolant flush — same disassembly, minimal added cost
